A SMALL community in China’s northern Shanxi Province is in shock after six children were killed after falling through the ice while skating on a frozen river.

Rescue operations to pull the children, all aged between five and 11, from the frigid waters were delayed by the dangerous conditions. One rescue worker also fell through the thin ice and had to be hauled clear by colleagues attached to him with safety lines.

Emergency workers rushed to the scene about 4.30pm local time Saturday after the alarm was raised.

It took five hours to recover the bodies of the six children. All were rushed to hospital but efforts to revive them failed.
