Above: The FORCE band. Now causing rashes and allergic reactions.

FITBIT, the maker of a fitness-tracking bracelet that some consumers say has caused burn-like marks on their wrists, said it will stop selling the Force band and recall the product from consumers.

“We have stopped selling Force and have decided to conduct a voluntary recall,” Chief Executive James Park wrote in a blog post on Fitbit’s website.

In a statement Fitbit said it was conducting the recall “out of an abundance of caution”.

Fitbit reiterated an offer to refund consumers who purchased the $129 Force.

In the blog post, Mr. Park wrote that 1.7 per cent of Force users had reported any irritation.

In the company statement, Fitbit said “affected users are likely experiencing an allergic reaction” to materials in the bracelet.

Mr. Park wrote that “some users may be reacting to the nickel,” a component of the stainless steel used in the device.

Others, he wrote, “are likely experiencing an allergic reaction to the materials used in the strap or the adhesives used to assemble the product”.

Mr. Park said an independent lab had ruled out problems with the battery or electrical system.

The Wall Street Journal last week reported mounting complaints from about skin problems on their wrists, some of which required medical attention and prescription medication. At least one person said that she had been offered a financial settlement from Fitbit.

Fitbit released the Force in October, and complaints started before the end of 2013.

The company says the device can “track steps taken, distance travelled, calories burned, stairs climbed and active minutes throughout the day.”

At night, it tracks users’ sleep patterns. Data can be seen on the wristband’s display or on a smartphone or computer.
